The form dates it to about 1810, probably built soon after 1805 by the Tazewell family.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an extremely rare center-chimney dwelling for Virginia at so late a date. It is a rare example of this plan used for the principal house of a large plantation. The plan may derive from early English prototypes that were common in seventeenth-century Virginia. The property also has ties to the Branche, Tanner and Tazewell families.","narrative":"Richmond View, also known as Kingsland, is a small frame house near the meeting of Kingsland Creek and the James River, just south of Richmond. It rises a story and a half, with a one-story ell extending to the rear. Its entry vestibule sits in front of a central brick chimney, with one room on each side, a plan rarely seen in Virginia. Original beaded weatherboards survive beneath later asbestos siding, and early mantels, doors and hardware remain inside. The land began as a 1635 grant to Christopher Branche. Branch Tanner later assembled an estate of nearly 2,000 acres, and by 1805 it was held by Dr. William Tazewell through his wife, Tanner's daughter. The house was probably built early in their ownership and was sold in 1851 to Richard A. Willis. Its significance rests on its rare center-chimney plan, which may reflect an earlier English house type. The form describes the house as vacant and in fair condition.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant, in fair condition and altered, on its original site.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.76162-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6801/41680150/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/75002019.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002019/7043c1c93a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002019/7043c1c93a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kingsland_site_on_Willis_Road.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kingsland_site_on_Willis_Road.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680150","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingsland_(Chimney_Corner,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712672"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/chesterfield-county/kingsland-75002019/"}
