Randolph C. Doom, a pioneer customs agent, located 7½ miles west of Jasper, Jasper County, Texas. It was moved about half a mile to its present site in 1959.","why_significant":"The house is significant for its link to Randolph C. Doom, a prominent Texas settler, customs collector and state legislator, and as an early vernacular interpretation of the Greek Revival style in Texas. It is also noted for later visits by Sam Rayburn (1960) and Lyndon Johnson (1963).","narrative":"Built around 1856, this two-story frame house near Jasper, Texas, was home to Col. Randolph C. Doom, a Kentucky-born volunteer in the Texas revolution who became collector of customs for the Sabine district and later served in the Texas legislature. An island in Sabine Lake was named for him. The house is a vernacular version of the Greek Revival style, with a wide central hall, front rooms opening onto a 10-by-50-foot veranda with six square columns, exterior brick chimneys, shiplap siding and six-over-six windows. It lacks dormers, and its long gabled roof extends over the porch. The Doom family kept it into the 1920s, after which it passed to a Port Arthur owner. In 1959 it was moved about half a mile to its present location. Visits by House Speaker Sam Rayburn in 1960 and Vice-President Lyndon Johnson in 1963 add a political chapter to its history.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date ca. 1856)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (vernacular adaptation)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Moved in 1959 from its original site; used by its owner as a weekend retreat and marked occupied, private ownership.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.770489-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/9726/40972663/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/75001995.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972663","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001230"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/jasper-county/doom-col-randolph-c-house-75001995/"}
