It is tied to Nathaniel Kellum and to Zerviah Noble, who ran a school there and helped establish public schools. Efforts to save it from demolition led to the founding of the Harris County Heritage Society.","narrative":"Built between 1847 and 1848 for Nathaniel Kellum, this two-story brick house in Houston's Sam Houston Park is among the city's earliest surviving residences. Kellum, a brick maker and businessman, ran a kiln, sawmill, tannery and foundry, and had the bricks laid by Francis McHugh. The Greek Revival house has a central hall plan and double galleries, a form typical of Louisiana-type houses. Abram and Zerviah Noble bought it in 1851; Zerviah opened a school there and later helped found Houston's public schools. The ell added about 1857 held her classroom. The city bought the property in 1899 for its first public park, and the house later served as a park office and held the first zoo. After a fire in the early 1950s left it abandoned and slated for demolition, citizens formed the Harris County Heritage Society, which bought and restored it. It now operates as a house museum on its original site.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Built for Nathaniel Kellum; Francis McHugh contracted to lay the bricks","architectural_style":"Greek Revival (Louisiana-type galleried house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored and in use as a house museum, with a children's \"touch museum\" in the rear ell and occasional social events; condition listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.891691-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/9724/40972416/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/75001989.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001989/679cd3e341-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001989/679cd3e341-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Ed Uthman, Houston, Texas, USA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kellum-Noble_House_(HDR).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed Uthman, Houston, Texas, USA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kellum-Noble_House_(HDR).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972416","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q108073162"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/harris-county/kellum-noble-house-75001989/"}
