It is described as the only extant example of that style in Denison and the last opulent residence on North Austin Avenue. It was also the home of George Braun, a prominent local businessman, and was once a showplace of the city.","narrative":"Built in 1882 and completed in 1883, this two-story frame house at 421 North Austin Avenue in Denison was designed by local builder-architect J. B. McDougle for businessman George Braun. Braun came from St. Louis, where he had worked for Anheuser-Busch, and in Denison he founded the Depot Saloon and the Northern Lake Ice Company. German carpenters were brought in to build the house in the Italian Villa style then fashionable in St. Louis. It has a flat roof with cast-iron balustrade and finials, a wraparound veranda with fan-motif brackets, six chimneys, fourteen-foot ceilings, curly pine doors and cast-iron mantels. A belvedere, the porch balustrade and the gardens and outbuildings are gone. The house was listed as the only known example of its style in the city and the last opulent residence on North Austin Avenue.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"J. B.
