The house went up between 1836 and 1856 on a bluff above the Colorado River valley. Below it, in a protected canyon, the brewery used spring water and stone aging rooms cut and laid from Kreische's own quarry. Described as the first commercial brewery in Texas, it was producing beer before 1860 and shipped it as far as Fort Worth and San Antonio under the name Frisch Auf. Kreische also built local churches, a jail and a courthouse, and cut stone for an early monument to Texas heroes. Competition from ice-cold St. Louis beer cut into his business. His family closed the brewery in 1888. The property is valued for its early industry and its high standard of stonework.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Henry Ludwig Kreische","architectural_style":"German Colonial limestone structure (house); Federal elements noted in the data sheet","criteria":[],"status_note":"The house holds a museum of early Texas artifacts and has a caretaker living in it.
