Commerce (formerly 440 E. Commerce) in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.","why_significant":"The house is presented as an excellent example of the transitional style between Greek Revival and Victorian, often called symmetrical Victorian. It is one of the few remaining symmetrical Victorian homes in San Antonio and reflects the construction that once surrounded this part of the city. It is also tied to preservation work for Hemisfair '68.","narrative":"Built between 1868 and the late 1870s, this one-story caliche house on East Commerce Street in San Antonio blends Greek Revival and Victorian features. Its symmetrical five-bay front has a central door with decorative sidelights and a transom holding small diamond-shaped stained glass panes. A gallery with chamfered columns, brackets and a punched spandrel runs across the front, and a rear ell and full basement with a dirt floor add to its character. George Schroeder, a grocer and dry goods merchant, bought the lots in 1877, and his family kept the house until 1910. Later it housed renters, mostly businesses. Urban Renewal bought the land in 1965 for Hemisfair '68, and the house was preserved and renovated for use by a souvenir company. It has been vacant since 1971 and is now surrounded by parking lots and office buildings. It is valued as one of the few surviving symmetrical Victorian homes in the city.","period_of_significance":"1868-77","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Transitional Greek Revival to Victorian (symmetrical Victorian)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in the late 1960s for Hemisfair, then vacant since 1971 and deteriorated by vandals and weather; the city announced plans to restore it for offices.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.299438-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/9711/40971121/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/75001954.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001954/c2d38c750b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001954/c2d38c750b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schroeder-Yturri_House1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schroeder-Yturri_House1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971121","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001623"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bexar-county/schroeder-yturri-house-75001954/"}
