Its present mill was erected shortly after an 1892 fire on the foundations of an earlier mill.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the mill is significant as one of only six Centre County mill sites with a portion of the original mill remaining, and one of only two mills left in the immediate Bellefonte area. Its timber framing, iron star bolts and tie rods, and its location near the Bellefonte Branch of the Pennsylvania Canal and Spring Creek are also noted as features of interest.","narrative":"A three and one-half story brick grist mill stands on the west bank of Spring Creek in Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania, on limestone foundations. William Lamb built a grist mill on this site in 1786. After a fire destroyed the mill in 1892, the owners Gerberich, Hale & Co. erected the present building shortly afterwards on the original foundations. A local newspaper in 1894 described it as a model mill with roller process machinery. The mill takes its name from George Gamble, who bought a share around 1901, became sole owner, and retired in 1923. Its main structure is forty-five feet square, with heavy timber columns and beams joined with wood pegs, and iron star bolts and tie rods. It is regarded as one of only two surviving mills in the immediate Bellefonte area, and one of six in Centre County that retain part of an original mill. The mill has not ground grain since 1947.","period_of_significance":"c. 1894","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"The mill has not been used for grinding grain since 1947 and the form describes its condition as deteriorated.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.361765-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/75001627.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001627/c3c7998829-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001627/c3c7998829-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gamble_Mill_Aug_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gamble_Mill_Aug_10.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"77001136","name":"Bellefonte Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/bellefonte-historic-district-77001136/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71994614","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamble_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5519657"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/centre-county/gamble-mill-75001627/"}
