It is nominated for engineering significance and as a landmark of a well-known central Ohio bridge builder.","narrative":"Spanning Big Darby Creek 3.5 miles south of Marysville, this wooden covered bridge was probably built in the 1870s, though the exact date is unknown. It is a single span 154 feet long with a clear span of 150 feet, vertical siding, a metal roof, slightly projecting portals and stone abutments. Its trusses follow the plan patented in 1872 by Reuban Partridge, a Marysville builder who worked in Delaware, Franklin and Union Counties. Only six Partridge truss bridges remain, five of them in Union County. The roofed windows along the sides were likely cut later to improve visibility for automobile drivers. The name comes from the many Reed families who lived nearby. The State Highway Department took over the road around 1931, and the state bypassed the bridge in 1963, after which it reverted to the county. It is now closed to traffic, maintained by the county commissioners and the county historical society, and open to visitors.","period_of_significance":"1870's","architect_builder":"Reuban Partridge (Partridge truss designer and builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Generally good condition with some siding missing from vandalism; closed to traffic but open to visitors, maintained by the county commissioners and county historical society.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.259371-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001547.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001547/77a28c7b0e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001547/77a28c7b0e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reed_Covered_Bridge_site.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reed_Covered_Bridge_site.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991789","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reed_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q58904066"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/union-county/reed-covered-bridge-75001547/"}
