At 178 feet it is among the longest covered bridges in the state. It also belongs to the historic Lockington area, which grew up around the Miami and Erie Canal.","narrative":"Crossing the west channel of the Great Miami River one mile east of Lockington, this two-span covered bridge carries County Road 132 on a 20-panel Long truss, a type patented in 1830 by Col. Stephen H. Long of the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers. The county engineer dates it to 1848. It measures 178 feet overall with a 166-foot clear span and a 16-foot roadway. Vertical siding runs up to the eaves, the roof is wood shingle, and the cut stone abutments and pier are original. Steel channels and steel rods were later added for reinforcement, but the outward appearance has changed little, and the bridge has never been painted. It is the last covered bridge in Shelby County and one of only eight Long trusses left in Ohio. Its construction coincided with the heyday of the Miami and Erie Canal, which created the community of Lockington and its six hand-dressed stone locks.","period_of_significance":"1848","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as kept in good condition, with some steel reinforcement added; the site is unaltered in location and open to the public without restriction.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.024516-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001532.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001532/25b9ce4dfd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001532/25b9ce4dfd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Christdt","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lockington_Covered_Bridge_winter.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Christdt</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lockington_Covered_Bridge_winter.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991327","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockington_Covered_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6665659"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/shelby-county/lockington-covered-bridge-75001532/"}
