It is one of the few covered bridges left in Noble County, out of more than one hundred that once spanned its streams. It also reflects the county's agricultural past and the farmer-carpenter bridge-building tradition.","narrative":"This one-span wooden covered bridge crosses the Middle Fork of Duck Creek in Jefferson Township, Noble County, Ohio, about a mile and a half south of Middleburg. Built in 1914 after a flood in 1913 washed out an earlier bridge on the site, it is a five-panel multiple kingpost truss made of native white oak, roughly 58 feet 7 inches long and 11 feet 8 inches wide. It has vertical board siding, a metal roof, projecting portals and stone abutments. The bridge once carried the only road through the township, linking Marietta and Barnesville, until the route was relocated around 1928 or 1929. It takes its name from the Huffman family, early settlers who farmed the creek valley and raised sheep on the hillsides. With more than one hundred covered bridges once standing in the county, it is now one of the few survivors and a reminder of the area's farming era.","period_of_significance":"1914","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Multiple kingpost truss covered bridge","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition because it has never carried much traffic; the form notes it is still in use for farming activities.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.212879-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001513.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001513/a3c6ea5523-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001513/a3c6ea5523-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HUFFMAN_COVERED_BRIDGE.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990799","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huffman_Covered_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5929570"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/noble-county/huffman-covered-bridge-75001513/"}
