It is tied to Daniel Miller, a Pennsylvania settler who built mills on Wolf Creek and became a large landowner. Local tradition also holds that it served as an Underground Railroad station and as an early meeting house for a German Baptist Brethren congregation.","narrative":"Built around 1808 on a bluff overlooking the valley in west Dayton, this two-story brick house was the mansion of Daniel Miller, a Pennsylvanian who arrived in 1802 and settled near Wolf Creek. He and his family built a sawmill and gristmill there and he became an extensive landowner. The house is a rectangular central-hall Federal design with a five-bay facade, stucco over American bond brick, a coursed stone basement and an original cellar kitchen fireplace with its pot crane. Poplar and oak floors and molded woodwork survive throughout. A one-and-one-half-story kitchen wing with a large cooking fireplace and bake oven was added before 1820. Twentieth-century renovations added a front porch, a gable dormer and a broken pediment entrance. Miller belonged to the German Baptist Brethren, and the house served as an early meeting place for the congregation. Local tradition also says it sheltered escaped slaves heading to Canada in the 1840s and 1850s. It is valued as an early, fine Federal example in the county.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (c. 1808)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in very good repair and completely restorable to its original condition; used as a private residence; condition marked altered, original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.372561-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001504.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001504/482aaa3f90-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001504/482aaa3f90-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Miller_Farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Miller_Farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990402","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138610816"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/montgomery-county/miller-daniel-house-75001504/"}
