They are the surviving link to Manor's life and to frontier and canal-town life of the mid-1800s. Fire in 1846 and cholera later destroyed or emptied the rest of the town.","narrative":"Three buildings on a few acres in Providence, Lucas County, Ohio, are all that remain of a once-busy canal town on the Maumee River. Peter Manor, the area's first white settler, laid out Providence in 1835 on land given to him by the Ottawa chief Tondogamie. The town grew with the Miami and Wabash and Erie canals, reaching five hotels and four general stores. In 1845 Manor built his brick home and St. Patrick's Church, which he donated to the community. A fire in 1846 destroyed most of the hastily built wooden business district, and cholera later led to the town's abandonment. The surviving Manor House has stucco covering its brick and stone trim, plus later additions. The church keeps its lancet windows and belfry. A simple frame building, now an antique shop, completes the group. Together they preserve the memory of Manor and of frontier canal-town life in the mid-1800s.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; specific date 1845 (Manor House and Church)","architect_builder":"Peter Manor (builder of St. Patrick's Church and the Manor House)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked fair and altered; the frame building is now an antique shop, and the Manor House is a private residence with a garage, porch and stucco added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.069865-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001467.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990027","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lucas-county/providence-historic-district-75001467/"}
