Its truss is an unusual adaptation of the basic multiple kingpost, and it lies within the historic Hanging Rock Iron Region. The nomination calls it an outstanding example of 19th century engineering skills.","narrative":"Spanning Indian Guyan Creek on county road 67, this 1874 covered bridge sits half a mile east of the crossroads community of Scottown in Lawrence County, Ohio. It is a single-span wooden truss, 88 feet long overall with a roadway about 13 feet wide. Its truss is an unusual variation on the multiple kingpost, with added braces and counterbraces in the center panels and a segmented arch on each side of each truss. Hand-adze marks are still visible on some timbers. Over time the bridge gained steel rods, channels, gussets and I-beams, concrete at the abutment seats, and sheet metal siding and roof; the roof was last replaced in 1971. It is the last covered bridge in the county and the southernmost in Ohio, and it lies within the historic Hanging Rock Iron Region. The builder is unknown. It was listed as an outstanding example of nineteenth-century engineering.","period_of_significance":"1874","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Adaptation of the basic multiple kingpost truss","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition; roof replaced in 1971; sheet metal siding and roof; reinforced with steel and concrete; occupied/in use as a public road bridge.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.745-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001456.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001456/b5f01d47d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001456/b5f01d47d0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SCOTTOWN_COVERED_BRIDGE.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989657","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottown_Covered_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q58904076"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lawrence-county/scottown-covered-bridge-75001456/"}
