Its design and craftsmanship were praised in 1868 press coverage.","narrative":"St. James Episcopal Church, at 141 North State Street in Painesville, is a brick Gothic Revival building with stone trim, a stone foundation and a gabled roof. Its symmetrical front facade centers on a three-story tower with an ogee-arched entrance, carved stonework, lancet windows, small pinnacles and an eight-sided wooden spire. Stepped brick buttresses mark the corners, and pointed-arch windows line the sides. Inside, the woodwork is walnut, with a paneled ceiling, decorative hammer beams and three tall stained glass windows in the apse. The church was built between 1865 and 1868 for a parish organized in 1824, replacing an earlier church of 1836 that was sold and moved to Perry. Plans were drawn in 1864 by Heard and Blythe of Cleveland, a leading regional firm led by Charles Wallace Heard. A newspaper of 1868 praised the thoroughness and skill of the work. Total cost with furnishings was reported as seventy thousand dollars.","period_of_significance":"1865-1868","architect_builder":"Heard and Blythe (Charles Wallace Heard and Walter Blythe)","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in religious use; condition marked fair; a new wing stands at the northwest corner of the original building.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.218553-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001455.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001455/4fc316834c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001455/4fc316834c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._James_Episcopal_Church_Painesville_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._James_Episcopal_Church_Painesville_Ohio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989599","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._James_Episcopal_Church_(Painesville,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7588487"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/st-james-episcopal-church-75001455/"}
