It was built in 1831 under the supervision of Samuel Earhart.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as a local landmark commemorating the Nathaniel Armstrong family, one of the area's earliest pioneer families, and as the oldest church in the Village of Indian Hill. It is also cited for its role in the growth of Methodism locally and as an example of early American church architecture dating from 1831.","narrative":"Armstrong Chapel is a plain rectangular brick church with a gabled roof and a projecting tower, located on Drake Road in Indian Hill, Ohio. Built in 1831, it stands on land given in 1830 by Nathaniel S. Armstrong and his wife Hannah, to be used as a church and burial ground. Samuel Earhart supervised construction, and church members are believed to have done much of the work. The only exterior ornament is a small brick arch and keystone over the entrance, and a bell tower was added in 1890. Inside, the chapel has a bowed ceiling, two memorial stained glass windows, and original hand-carved pews. It was the only church in Indian Hill for 120 years and has remained Methodist throughout. The adjoining cemetery predates the chapel and holds veterans of every American war from the Revolution through World War II. A major restoration took place in 1972.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Samuel Earhart","architectural_style":"Early American church architecture, derived from the tradition of Christopher Wren's English parish churches","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked excellent and the property is occupied and in religious use; the chapel was extensively restored in 1972.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.060621-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001432.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001432/2d524ba3ba-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001432/2d524ba3ba-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OldArmstrongChapel.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OldArmstrongChapel.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989141","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_Chapel_United_Methodist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4793920"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/united-methodist-church-75001432/"}
