It is also tied to Joseph Ferris, a prosperous early settler who farmed, distilled corn and acquired over 700 acres. The site later served as a memorial library, restaurant and office building.","narrative":"Built around 1820 by Joseph Ferris, this three-and-a-half story red brick house in the Fairfax area of Cincinnati is a good example of Federal Style architecture. It has a gable roof, paired interior end chimneys joined by a parapet, Flemish bond brickwork and a five-bay north facade. The raised center entry features an elliptical fanlight, sidelights, Ionic pilasters and a porch with paired Ionic columns. Ferris, born in Connecticut, moved west shortly after 1799, farmed corn and hogs, and distilled some of the corn, which gave nearby Whiskey Hollow its name. He eventually held over 700 acres and built a brick schoolhouse for his eight children. Excavations for Indian artifacts were carried out near the house around 1900. In the 1930s it served as the Joseph Ferris Memorial Library, later as a restaurant, and it is now an office building. A recent addition stands to the south, and a gasoline station sits in front.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (ca. 1820)","architect_builder":"Joseph Ferris (builder)","architectural_style":"Federal Style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and altered; formerly a library and restaurant, now used as an office building.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.249888-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001417.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001417/1555cc18e5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001417/1555cc18e5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Ferris_House_in_color.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Ferris_House_in_color.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07000431","name":"Village of Mariemont","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/village-of-mariemont-07000431/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988877","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Ferris_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6283069"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/ferris-joseph-house-75001417/"}
