Bushnell and other Ohio notables present.","narrative":"Westerville High School, later known as Emerson School, is a two-story Romanesque revival school at 44 North Vine Street. Yost & Packard of Columbus designed it, and it was dedicated on March 19, 1896, on the site of an earlier school used from 1867 to 1895. It is built of red brick from a local brick and tile factory, with gray cut stone trim and a high stone foundation. The west entrance has a wide stone arch, flanked by brick turrets with metal spires and topped by a steep roof over an open belfry. Five-sided bays with pagoda-style roofs mark the north and south ends. A matching two-story addition followed in 1904. The exterior remains unaltered, the original bell still hangs in the belfry and is rung each morning, and a circular second-floor room serves as a library and study hall. The building was recognized for its architecture and its long role in the town's public education.","period_of_significance":"1896; addition 1904","architect_builder":"Yost & Packard of Columbus","architectural_style":"Romanesque revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition, unaltered exterior, owned by the Westerville Board of Education and in educational use; the Board planned to keep using it at least through the decade.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.91682-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001405.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001405/28b8bfa3cc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001405/28b8bfa3cc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Chaplah","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Westerville_High_School-Vine_Street_School_2012-09-24_12-59-41.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Chaplah</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Westerville_High_School-Vine_Street_School_2012-09-24_12-59-41.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100004055","name":"Uptown Westerville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/uptown-westerville-historic-district-100004055/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988487","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westerville_High_School-Vine_Street_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716934"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/westerville-high-school-vine-street-school-75001405/"}
