A log house built in 1809 was followed by a five-bay brick front section in 1820 and a rear brick addition around 1868.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as an exceptionally fine example of regional architecture. It was built for Valentine Reber by John Leist, a builder, wood carver and stone carver credited with four of the finest regional houses in Fairfield County. The carved interior woodwork is described as unsurpassed in the region.","narrative":"Set along OH 188 west of Lancaster, this Fairfield County farmhouse grew in stages. Valentine Reber, who came to the county in 1805, first lived in a log house built in 1809. In 1820 a five-bay, two-story brick front was added, and around 1868 a larger brick section replaced the log portion at the rear. The front has a recessed center entrance with a paneled door, carved trim and a mullioned fanlight under a stone hoodmold. Windows have stone lintels with carved medallion corner blocks, and the cornice has carved dentils. Inside, a carved stairway rises to the attic, and four different mantels carry acorn, urn, sunburst and rope motifs. John Leist, a builder and carver who also served in the Ohio Legislature, designed the house. The form describes its interiors as works of art and ranks it among the finest regional houses of its period.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"John Leist","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Private residence, altered by the later rear addition and modern systems; the Victorian rear section was restored to harmonize with the 1820 front portion.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.205026-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001395.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001395/21b7dbdf19-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001395/21b7dbdf19-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Tristan Blatt","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Valentine_Reber_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tristan Blatt</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Valentine_Reber_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988213","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137801596"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/fairfield-county/reber-valentine-house-75001395/"}
