The centerpiece house at 128 Center Street was built in 1847-1848 by Zenas King.","why_significant":"The group contains what the nomination calls the most elaborate and dignified Greek Revival house in Milan and one of northern Ohio's important architectural examples. The six other houses support it through good proportions, detail and their relationship to it and to one another. The houses were built at the height of Milan's canal-era prosperity and form a consistent, harmonious neighborhood.","narrative":"Seven Greek Revival houses on Center Street in Milan, Ohio, make up this small district of about 2.8 acres. Four are brick and three are frame, and they stand near the corner of Center and Judson Streets. The centerpiece, at 128 Center Street, is a two-story brick house with a four-column Ionic portico, carved acanthus-leaf woodwork over the doorway and windows, wooden corner pilasters and a dentiled cornice. It was built in 1847-1848 by Zenas King, an inventor and engineer who was among the country's first builders of iron bridges. Jeptha Wade, later president of Western Union, also lived there. The other six houses have sandstone trim, transom and sidelight entrances, and robust friezes and corner pilasters. They date from the period of prosperity that followed construction of the Milan Canal. Together, the houses show Greek Revival design at its height with notable consistency, and they were recognized as a distinct, harmonious group of neighboring houses.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1847)","architect_builder":"Zenas King (builder of the Mitchell-Turner House, 1847-1848)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked excellent and altered; present use is private residence and the properties are occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.006415-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001382.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988124","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/mitchell-historic-district-75001382/"}
