It contains civic, commercial, religious and residential buildings from the 1820s to the 1890s.","why_significant":"The district preserves a relatively intact late nineteenth century civic center and public square of a village in the Western Reserve Firelands, along with a representative section of nineteenth century residential streets. It also includes buildings loosely tied to the life of Thomas A. Edison, Milan's most famous citizen. It is recognized for architecture, commerce and social/humanitarian significance.","narrative":"Milan's historic district gathers about 6.4 acres around the village public square, with its Civil War monument, and along Main, Front, Edison and Church Streets. The focal point is a group on the east side of the square: a Second Empire Town Hall, the Italianate Kelley Block of 1869-1870, and a bank building of 1826, the oldest surviving structure on the square. Most early buildings were lost to nineteenth century fires, and the Town Hall and Police Station date from the rebuilding of 1888-1889. Nearby stand two Presbyterian church buildings, a chapel of 1887 and a Victorian Gothic church of 1889-1890. East of the square, Front Street and Edison Drive hold houses from the 1840s to the 1890s in Greek Revival, Italianate and Colonial Revival styles, including the Galpin House, now a museum. The area is tied to Thomas A. Edison through his christening site and the doctor who assisted at his birth. Milan was settled in 1810 and prospered as a canal port after 1839.","period_of_significance":"1826-1890","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire, Italianate, Greek Revival, Victorian Gothic, Early Gothic Revival and Neo-Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as excellent and altered; the district is occupied and includes government, commercial, residential, religious and museum uses.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.319235-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001381.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988126","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q49526210"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/milan-historic-district-75001381/"}
