It also recalls the era of Bedford's water-powered gristmills, since the Gates mill was the last of them to disappear. Its exterior and interior detail are largely intact.","narrative":"Built in 1892-1893 at 762 Broadway in Bedford, this large two-and-a-half story frame house shows the Queen Anne style in full. A three-story octagonal tower with a steep pyramidal roof marks the east corner, a veranda with turned spindle posts wraps the northeast side, and a second-story loggia ends in a curved bow with a conical roof. Siding varies from clapboard to stick-style lattice, and the gables carry scrollwork and circular windows. Inside, oak woodwork, a spiral-baluster staircase, a carved screen between parlors and leaded stained glass survive. Washington Gates, who owned a mill on Tinker's Creek, built the house for his son Holsey, who helped enlarge and modernize the mill. The mill closed in 1908 and was the last Bedford gristmill to vanish. The house passed to Holsey's daughter, Edna Gates Handyside, and remains the village's most elegant residence from its era.","period_of_significance":"1892-1893","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and used as a private residence at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.208852-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001354.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001354/d557539436-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001354/d557539436-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 1.0","author":"Christopher Busta-Peck","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holsey_Gates_Residence_Bedford_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher Busta-Peck</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/1.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 1.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holsey_Gates_Residence_Bedford_Ohio.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000712","name":"Bedford Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/bedford-historic-district-04000712/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987550","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137636271"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/gates-holsey-house-75001354/"}
