Traditionally dated to 1832, it was the home of town founder Hezekiah Dunham.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house was the home of Bedford's most important early citizen, Hezekiah Dunham, who laid out the town plat in 1834. It is also a rare survivor on a densely commercial street and a good example of early nineteenth century building.","narrative":"Standing on a narrow lot a dozen steps above the sidewalk on Broadway in Bedford, this two-story brick house in the late Adam style was the home of Hezekiah Dunham. Its five-bay facade has a center entrance with a semi-elliptical fanlight and sidelights. A frame wing at the rear appears to be older than the brick section, and some of its joists are unfinished logs. The porch and Italianate brackets were added after 1872. Dunham arrived around 1830 or 1831, and the house is traditionally dated to 1832. In 1834 he had part of his land surveyed for a village, with lots set aside for a public square, town hall and school, and he routed the main street past his door. Bedford was incorporated in 1837. The house survives amid dense commercial development and illustrates early nineteenth century construction. It currently holds rental apartments, and its owner plans rehabilitation.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific dates 1832; 1834)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Adam style (Federal with Italianate elements)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Good condition but altered; used for rental apartments, with the historical society owner planning rehabilitation and public use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.379474-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/75001352.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001352/cc891a12a2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001352/cc891a12a2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 1.0","author":"Christopher Busta-Peck","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hezekiah_Dunham_house_Bedford_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher Busta-Peck</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/1.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 1.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hezekiah_Dunham_house_Bedford_Ohio.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000712","name":"Bedford Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/bedford-historic-district-04000712/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987804","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137636260"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/dunham-hezekiah-house-75001352/"}
