It was nominated under Agriculture, tied to the Jones family's farming. It also stands as a sensitive, successful adaptive reuse of an antebellum house.","narrative":"Northeast of Raleigh, on the east side of U.S. 401, stands a two-story frame house built about 1847 for Alpheus Jones, son of Seth Jones, on a 680-acre tract his father gave him in 1842. The house is a simple rectangular Greek Revival building with a hip roof, weatherboard siding, a stone foundation and a two-story double Doric portico on the western front. Inside, it keeps simple Greek Revival mantels, molded trim, marbleized baseboards and a straight open-string stair. Alpheus Jones, a lawyer and farmer, lived there only about seven years before his death in 1854. The property later passed through his heirs and several owners and suffered neglect around the turn of the twentieth century. It was acquired in 1968 and restored, and by 1975 it operated as a restaurant. It was nominated for its Agriculture association and as a restrained, representative Greek Revival plantation house with a successful adaptive use.","period_of_significance":"1847","architect_builder":"Possibly Richard Ligon (attribution uncertain; a timber is inscribed \"Richard Ligon March 28, 1847\")","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored and in use as a fine-foods restaurant (as of 1975); the form records the property as occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.589527-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/7224/47722433/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/75001295.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001295/7fa69dc08b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001295/7fa69dc08b-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Pithon314","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alpheus_Jones_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pithon314</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alpheus_Jones_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722433","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpheus_Jones_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24436291"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/jones-alpheus-house-75001295/"}
