It was built in two parts in the early 19th century, with an addition made a few years after the first section.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a Federal plantation house of considerable architectural distinction. Its Adamesque interiors are described as outstanding of their type in the state and are stylistically related to work in two 1830s houses in neighboring Caswell County. The plantation is also tied to the Brodnax family and to the earlier Byrd and Farley land holdings.","narrative":"Set in an oak grove near Eden, Cascade Plantation, known as Willow Oaks Farm, is a two-story Federal house of beaded weatherboard on a Flemish-bond brick foundation. It was built in two stages: a three-bay section first, then a two-bay addition a few years later. A one-story porch with paired Doric columns marks the front, and a fanlighted double door opens to a center hall. The addition and hall hold elaborate Adamesque woodwork, including gouged rosettes and sunbursts, Ionic pilasters, arched nooks and ornate mantels, which the nomination calls outstanding in North Carolina. The land was part of a large tract once owned by William Byrd II and later sold to the Farley family. William Edward Brodnax bought 2,664 acres in 1811 and may have built part of the house, then called Cascade. His son Robert is said to have brought it to its present form. A smokehouse and a plantation and doctor's office also survive.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (with Adamesque interior finish)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, private residence, in excellent condition and altered; a smokehouse and an office survive as outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.156066-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/82/7219/47721982/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/75001288.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721982","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascade_Plantation","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19871921"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/rockingham-county/cascade-plantation-75001288/"}
