Higley.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the most handsome examples of Greek Revival religious architecture in North Carolina. It is the most academic of a distinctive group of Greek Revival Presbyterian churches built in southeastern North Carolina by descendants of Scots settlers. Its distyle-in-antis portico is rare in the state but common in New England, possibly reflecting Higley's Connecticut background.","narrative":"Philadelphus Presbyterian Church is a frame, temple-form Greek Revival building in Robeson County, North Carolina, built between about 1859 and 1863. Its south gable front has a distyle-in-antis portico with fluted Doric columns, heavy Doric pilasters, a full entablature, and a steeple set on the roof ridge. Inside, a gallery on three sides rests on tapered wooden Doric columns and is reached by two spiral stairs. The congregation grew from the Scots settlers who came to the Upper Cape Fear valley in the mid-eighteenth century, and it was probably organized before 1795. Fifty-two people contributed to the new building. Local tradition names Gilbert P. Higley, a carpenter from Hartford, Connecticut, as architect and contractor, and his New England roots may explain the in-antis portico, which is rare in North Carolina. The church is regarded as one of the state's finest Greek Revival religious buildings, and it and its cemetery remain in regular use.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Gilbert P.
