It was built in the late nineteenth century (c. 1880s), probably by James Jefferson White.","why_significant":"The house is a typical late nineteenth century farmhouse made extraordinary by its sawn and turned wooden ornament, described as perhaps without rival of its kind in the state. The two-level front porch is especially striking, with lacelike detailing and a comet-like motif. The remote mountain setting adds to its distinction.","narrative":"Deep in the Appalachian mountains northeast of Marshall, this two-story frame farmhouse looks ordinary in form: a T-shaped plan with a hip roof and a two-story gabled front porch. Its distinction lies in the wooden ornament. The porch carries sawn and turned work, including arches with keystones and carved pendants, and spandrels cut in a comet-like pattern with stars and feathery flames. A wide frieze with cable molding wraps the house, and two-story five-sided bays with colored fanlights flank the main block. Inside, a center hall leads to a rear wing, and the south parlor mantel shows Eastlake character in contrasting light and dark woods. The house was probably built by James Jefferson White, a farmer who bought 141 acres in 1881 and served as clerk of the Madison County Superior Court from 1883 to 1890. He had briefly served in a North Carolina regiment during the Civil War. The elaborate ornament, seldom matched in the state, is the reason for the listing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Built probably by James Jefferson White","architectural_style":"Late nineteenth century frame farmhouse with Eastlake elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as a private residence in good condition, altered, and occupied by its owners at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.155263-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/7211/47721148/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/75001279.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001279/8fb27f52d4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001279/8fb27f52d4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Warren LeMay","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jeff_White_House,_Petersburg,_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Warren LeMay</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jeff_White_House,_Petersburg,_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721148","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_White_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24436250"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/madison-county/white-jeff-house-75001279/"}
