It stands amid large trees at the end of a tree-lined lane.","why_significant":"The house is described as the best-preserved example in Franklin County of the Greek Revival-Italianate work of builder Jacob Holt, whose houses form a related group in Warren and Franklin counties. It also reflects the antebellum plantation society and kinship network of the Perry, Alston and Williams families in the Shocco Creek area.","narrative":"Built about 1857 near Gupton in Franklin County, this two-story frame house is a substantial four-square structure on a brick cellar, with a shallow hip roof, stuccoed chimneys and heavy pilaster-like cornerposts. It was probably built by Warrenton contractor Jacob Holt, whose Greek Revival-Italianate houses share distinctive features such as spearhead trefoil motifs, louvered folding doors and marbleized baseboards. Dr. Samuel Perry, a physician and planter, owned 37 slaves and a plantation of 1,100 improved acres in 1860. The house is regarded as the best-preserved of Holt's work in Franklin County and is tied by family and design to a group of houses in neighboring Warren County. Its interior retains dual stairways, a large folding-panel doorway in the center hall and Greek Revival mantels. The house has passed through the Perry family and then to the Alston family, who bought it in 1913.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1857","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival-Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Remains in the Alston family and in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.509577-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/7203/47720336/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/75001263.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001263/fb41debd58-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001263/fb41debd58-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"PeterVAndrews","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr_Samuel_Perry_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">PeterVAndrews</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr_Samuel_Perry_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720336","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Samuel_Perry_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18711634"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/franklin-county/perry-dr-samuel-house-75001263/"}
