It also holds notable outbuildings, including a tiny frame dairy and log structures with four types of corner timbering. One former slave house has a log and stick chimney, a rare survival in the state.","narrative":"Leigh Farm, east of Chapel Hill, is a modest nineteenth-century farm complex in a quiet rural setting. A one-story, three-bay frame house with a broad gable roof, wide pine interior sheathing and two stone-based chimneys stands among log and frame outbuildings: a corn crib, carriage house, dairy, smokehouse and two log dwellings said to have been slave quarters. Richard Stanford Leigh received the 500-acre tract in 1834, and the house was probably built soon after. By 1860 he held nearly a thousand acres and sixteen slaves. The family later suffered losses when Union troops passed through in 1865, and Leigh turned to a sawmill and store. The farm matters as a representative middle-class plantation that still holds tools, products and papers of rural Southern life. Its most unusual feature is a log slave house, later a weaving house, with a log and stick chimney, a type known in only two other recorded North Carolina examples.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition; the house was restored in 1950 and the log chimney is noted as in excellent condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.182699-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/7200/47720025/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/75001257.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001257/f2bc4e3609-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001257/f2bc4e3609-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"GreenRunner0","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leigh_Farm_Home_Exterior.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">GreenRunner0</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leigh_Farm_Home_Exterior.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720025","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leigh_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19986772"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/durham-county/leigh-farm-75001257/"}
