Its grounds retain remnants of gardens and ponds that gave the resort a picturesque setting. It is one of only a few such mid-19th-century hotels still standing in the county.","narrative":"Built between about 1847 and 1851, the American Hotel is a large, rectangular, 3 1/2 story wood building in the village of Sharon Springs, Schoharie County, New York. It has a two-story recessed porch with eight columns topped by Doric-inspired capitals, a boxed cornice that returns to form pediments at each end, beveled siding and six-over-six windows. The hotel was built to serve visitors who came for the mineral-sulphur springs, at a time when affluent city families summered in rural resort communities. Improved turnpikes had made travel to the area easier. Resort popularity declined late in the century as railroads favored competing areas and faith in the springs' cures waned. The hotel is regarded as one of the last grand Greek Revival resort hotels in the county. At the time of listing it stood vacant, its porch badly deteriorated, while a local restoration group worked to revive the village.","period_of_significance":"ca 1847-51","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as vacant and empty, with a badly deteriorated porch and overgrown grounds; a local restoration corporation formed in 1973 targeted it for revitalization.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.787918-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/75001228.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001228/aea22ff953-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001228/aea22ff953-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Elisa.rolle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:American_Hotel,_Sharon_Springs,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Elisa.rolle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:American_Hotel,_Sharon_Springs,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"94000541","name":"Sharon Springs Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/sharon-springs-historic-district-94000541/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321713","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Hotel_(Sharon_Springs,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4744021"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schoharie-county/american-hotel-75001228/"}
