It was built during the railroad-inspired boom that began in 1841 and influenced the design of many of the village's finer homes. The 1874 Victorian addition is also noted for its balance with the original building.","narrative":"Standing at the head of Main Street in Goshen, this county courthouse combines two buildings from different eras. The original, completed in 1841 to plans by architect Thornton Niven, is a two-story brick Greek Revival structure finished in stucco scored to resemble stone. It has a pedimented gable roof, a six-column Doric portico and a circular cupola with Ionic columns holding a bell. Beside it is a square Victorian brick building from 1874, decorated with pilasters, arched openings and moulded brickwork. The courthouse was built as the New York and Erie Railroad began operating in Goshen, and its orientation was turned so it would face the new westward extension of Main Street. Its design influenced several of the community's finer homes. Niven also designed a similar courthouse in Newburgh, and the two are among the few surviving examples of his work. Both Goshen buildings remain in use as county offices.","period_of_significance":"1841 and 1874 (19th century)","architect_builder":"Thornton Niven (architect); Luther Harris (superintendent of the Goshen project)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival, with a Victorian (1874) addition","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition, altered, on its original site; the courthouse and the 1874 building remain in use as county offices supplementing the new government plaza.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.207586-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/75001219.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001219/873fe6f21e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001219/873fe6f21e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Original uploader was Daniel Case at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1841_Goshen_Courthouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Original uploader was Daniel Case at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1841_Goshen_Courthouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80002735","name":"Church Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/church-park-historic-district-80002735/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320564","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1841_Goshen_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q201780"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/1841-goshen-courthouse-75001219/"}
