It contains mostly early 19th-century homes, a Greek Revival church (1838), a cemetery, a park monument and a 1900 school.","why_significant":"The district marks one of the first settled areas of what became Fulton County and keeps the look of the New England villages its post-Revolutionary settlers came from. Its 1838 Greek Revival church is an exceptional example of the style. The early architecture shows that this corner of Gloversville has an older history than the rest of the city, which grew around it.","narrative":"Kingsboro Historic District is a roughly 14-acre cluster of early dwellings in the northeast corner of Gloversville, New York, arranged around Kingsboro Avenue Park. It includes mainly one- and two-family homes, a church, a cemetery, a monument to pastor Elisha Yale, and a brick school of 1900 that now serves as a museum. Two houses keep the plain exteriors of about 1800, and most of the others date from 1820 to 1840. The district was one of the earliest settled areas in what became Fulton County. New Englanders, many from Connecticut, arrived after the Revolution and created a village with a green, white frame houses and a church. The 1838 Greek Revival church, built of brick with a wood pediment and tower, is the key building, and a local carpenter, Samuel Stewart Mills, is thought to have designed it. Gloversville later grew around the hamlet and absorbed it, but the architecture still records its earlier origins.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Kingsborough Church thought to have been designed and built by Samuel Stewart Mills, a local carpenter","architectural_style":"Greek Revival (church); early 19th-century New England-style homes","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent to good; the properties are in private and public ownership and in residential, religious, park and museum use.
