It has a main house begun in 1811 and finished around 1815 for John Armstrong, along with a farm complex and landscaped grounds.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Rokeby reflects the land use and lifestyle of the Livingston family along the Hudson River through the 19th century. It was home to Armstrong, a soldier, diplomat and Secretary of War, then to the Astor family and the Chanlers. The house and farm complex remain largely unaltered since the turn of the century and are still in a rural setting.","narrative":"Rokeby is a Hudson River country estate south of Barrytown, built in 1811-1815 as the third residence John Armstrong erected on land inherited by his wife, Alida Livingston. Armstrong, a Revolutionary War officer, diplomat and Secretary of War, built a fieldstone house with a central hall and a Palladian window above the entrance. Around 1816 he added a northern wing. Mid-century, William Backhouse and Margaret Astor enlarged the house to 48 rooms with a brick library tower, a north wing and a third story. Stanford White redesigned parts of the interior and porch in 1895. The grounds were landscaped around 1840 and again in 1911 by Olmsted Brothers. Barns, a gatehouse, a gardener's cottage and a greenhouse surround the house. Margaret Livingston Chanler later ran a dairy farm here. The estate survives with little change since about 1900 and is still in a rural setting.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1811-1815)","architect_builder":"Warner Richards, local master-builder (construction of the Armstrong house); Stanford White and McKim, Mead & White (1895 alterations and brick stable)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, on its original site, and in use as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.918996-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/75001181.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001181/6901c210d2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75001181/6901c210d2-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Zeek, Mark, creator","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SOUTHWEST_FRONT,_LOOKING_NORTHEAST_-_La_Bergerie,_River_Road,_Barrytown,_Dutchess_County,_NY_HABS_NY,14-BARTO.V,2-9.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Zeek, Mark, creator</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SOUTHWEST_FRONT,_LOOKING_NORTHEAST_-_La_Bergerie,_River_Road,_Barrytown,_Dutchess_County,_NY_HABS_NY,14-BARTO.V,2-9.tif"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"79001571","name":"Sixteen Mile District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/sixteen-mile-district-79001571/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317454","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rokeby_(Barrytown,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6461213"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/rokeby-75001181/"}
