The site is also described as remaining virtually as it was in 1779.","narrative":"Kettle Creek Battlefield, also called War Hill, is a 40-acre wooded tract encircling a 500-foot hill in Wilkes County, Georgia. On February 14, 1779, about 400 patriot frontiersmen under Colonels Andrew Pickens and John Dooly and Lt. Col. Elijah Clarke surprised a Loyalist force led by Col. James Boyd, who was mortally wounded. Only about 270 of roughly 700 Loyalists reached British forces afterward, and some 600 horses and much baggage were captured. The nomination describes it as one of the few Revolutionary War victories fought in Georgia and credits it with undermining British hopes of conquering the South through large-scale Tory recruitment. The hilltop carries a 1930 War Department monument, historical markers placed in 1958, and graves and monuments added in the 1960s and 1970s. Apart from an access road, a rechanneled creek and these features, the site is described as virtually unchanged since 1779. It has served as a public park.","period_of_significance":"February 14, 1779","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, wooded and used as a park, with a 1930 monument and later markers on the hilltop; nearby farmland was under developer options.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.80611-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/75000617.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75000617/e86ea7d468-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75000617/e86ea7d468-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Chris Crookston","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kettle_Creek_Battlefield_~_Wilkes_County,_GA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Crookston</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kettle_Creek_Battlefield_~_Wilkes_County,_GA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209961","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kettle_Creek_Battlefield","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16893294"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/wilkes-county/kettle-creek-battlefield-75000617/"}
