It is one of 22 covered bridges left in Georgia and one of 14 still in use. It is also one of 13 Georgia covered bridges built to the Town Lattice design, though it has only one lower chord.","narrative":"Crossing Auchumpkee Creek on Allen Road in Upson County, Georgia, this covered bridge was built in 1898 by Dr. J. W. Herring, a physician who also served on the county Commission of Roads and Revenue and built several other bridges and structures locally. The span is 120 feet 9 inches long and rests on two native stone piers. It is framed in rough-sawn heart pine using the Town Lattice truss, though it has a single lower chord rather than the two found on most Georgia examples. Its sides are covered in pine board and batten. The original split oak shingle roof has been replaced with metal, the only change recorded. The bridge is notable as the only covered bridge remaining on a public road in Middle Georgia, and one of 22 left in the state, 14 of them still in use. It is also known as the Hootenville Covered Bridge, after the nearby community and militia district.","period_of_significance":"1898","architect_builder":"Dr. J. W.
