Park Avenue in Pomona, Los Angeles County, California, built in 1837 by Ygnacio Palomares. It is owned by the City of Pomona and operates as a museum.","why_significant":"It is described as the first residence built in what became the city of Pomona, erected by one of the joint grantees of Rancho San Jose. It is also a typical example of California adobe construction. Later it was home to Francisco Palomares, a county supervisor and member of the first public school board.","narrative":"Built in 1837 by Ygnacio Palomares, one of the joint grantees of Rancho San Jose, this adobe house at 1569 North Park Avenue in Pomona is regarded as the first residence in the city. The walls are two and a half feet thick and rest on a stone and lime foundation, with deep-set windows and a porch across the front. The house was originally L-shaped, and its oldest portion is believed to be a room of sod construction. Palomares left it in 1854 for a new home, and his son Francisco, later a county supervisor and school board member, repaired it and lived there from 1867. The Nichols family owned it from 1886 until Roscoe Hart bought it in 1941 and added modern rooms. In 1972 the Historical Society of Pomona Valley bought the property, and the City of Pomona later took over the title. It now serves as a museum.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Ygnacio Palomares","architectural_style":"Vernacular (typical California adobe construction)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Open to the public on Sunday afternoons and occupied by caretakers; in good condition though altered, and used as a museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.999423-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/75000436.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75000436/9022d0a181-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75000436/9022d0a181-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Los Angeles","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Casa_Primera_de_Rancho_San_Jose.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Casa_Primera_de_Rancho_San_Jose.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859254","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Casa_Primera_de_Rancho_San_Jos%C3%A9","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14682993"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/la-casa-primera-de-rancho-san-jose-75000436/"}
