Meux, with construction begun in 1889 and possibly finished in 1890. A stable with storeroom remains on the 0.34-acre site.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the oldest remaining dwelling of consequence in Fresno and survives in nearly original condition. It is also the only surviving residence on its once-prominent street in the old town. It is an excellent example of eclectic Victorian residential architecture on the West Coast, and the Meux family lived there continuously for 81 years.","narrative":"Dr. Thomas R. Meux, a physician and Confederate Army surgeon who moved to Fresno's Central Valley in 1887, built this Victorian house at 1007 R Street, with construction starting in 1889. Its frame walls combine wood shingles and shiplap siding, and the asymmetrical plan includes a tower with a finial, elaborate chimneys and a porch wrapping three sides to keep out summer heat. Interiors retain stock Victorian millwork, art tile fireplaces, papered walls and gas lighting fixtures. A doctor's office and sun room were added on the west side between 1910 and 1912. The house was listed as the oldest remaining dwelling of consequence in Fresno and the only surviving residence on its old-town street. It was never remodeled or used for anything but a home, and the Meux family lived there continuously for 81 years. A stable with storeroom also survives on the 0.34-acre site.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Hans A.
