It replaced an earlier hotel of about 1857-58 that burned in 1868. It survived after the mining community around it faded because it was a stage stop on the Oroville-Susanville road.","narrative":"Inskip Hotel is a two-story frame inn of vertical board and batten, built in 1868 on the old Humbug Road north of Stirling City. John Stokes, who bought the earlier hotel in 1866, rebuilt it right after fire destroyed the original, which dated from about 1857 or 1858. Only a trunk of books and accounts was saved, and many of those records survive. The building has a high hipped roof with a center gable, an open front veranda, and ten upstairs sleeping rooms. It once held a store and post office. A rear addition now houses the bar, and three bathrooms have been added, but other changes have been minor. The hotel is considered important as the only one in Butte County in almost continuous operation for more than 125 years. It outlasted the mining community of Inskip, which once had about 1,000 residents, because it served as a stage stop on the main Oroville-Susanville road. Later it served skiers, hunters and fishermen.","period_of_significance":"1868 to present","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in fair condition and altered; in use as a commercial inn with private living quarters, a bar and a dining room.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.522307-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/75000425.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75000425/0d12f2809c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75000425/0d12f2809c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Williamwesleycollins","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Inskip_Inn.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Williamwesleycollins</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Inskip_Inn.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858435","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inskip_Hotel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18351643"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/butte-county/inskip-hotel-75000425/"}
