Its 26-room mansion, completed in 1886 to designs by Stanford White, sits within 49 acres of terraced grounds facing Monument Mountain. The house is Queen Anne in character, with corner turrets, paneled brick chimneys, Palladian windows, and a mix of brick and patterned shingles. Inside, a central hall opens to rooms finished in differing styles, including oak paneling, mahogany, and California redwood. Joseph Hodges Choate, a prominent lawyer who later served as Ambassador to the Court of St. James, had it built. Landscape architect Nathaniel Barrett laid out the original terraces, and Fletcher Steele extended the gardens for Choate's daughter Mabel over thirty years. Features include the Afternoon Garden, a Chinese Garden, and a fountain by Frederick MacMonnies. Mabel Choate left the estate to the Trustees of Reservations in 1959, and it is open to the public.","period_of_significance":"1886","architect_builder":"Stanford White, architect of house; Nathaniel Barrett & Fletcher Steele, landscape architects","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Bequeathed in 1959 to the Trustees of Reservations, which maintains it and makes it available to the public as a museum.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.902228-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/4/7943/63794304/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/75000264.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75000264/b1d1243ea2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75000264/b1d1243ea2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Naumkeag_(Stockbridge,_MA)_-_general_view.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Naumkeag_(Stockbridge,_MA)_-_general_view.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794304","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naumkeag","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6981257"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/naumkeag-75000264/"}
