It was also the home of Albon Chase, a prominent 19th-century Athens newspaper editor and businessman. It is one of few surviving 19th-century residences in the now commercial downtown.","narrative":"Built in 1840-41 for Albon Chase, this two-story brick house with scored stucco stands at 185 North Hull Street in downtown Athens, Georgia. Its plan is nearly square, with four rooms around a central hall, and a low hipped roof with four interior chimneys. A one-story temple-form portico with four Doric columns carries an unusually faithful Doric entablature with triglyphs and metopes. Chase, born in New Hampshire, came to Athens in the 1830s, edited the newspaper that became the Southern Banner, helped found the Pioneer Paper Mill, and served as an agent for the Southern Mutual Insurance Company. He sold the property in 1860. From 1888 to 1906 the First Presbyterian Church of Athens used it as a manse. The exterior has changed little, though shutters are gone and rear porches are enclosed. The house now holds six apartments, and a former summer kitchen or servants' quarters at the rear has also been converted. Commercial development surrounds it, and a bus station adjoins it.","period_of_significance":"1840-41","architect_builder":"Albon Chase (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Now a 6-unit apartment building; condition listed as fair, altered, and threatened by surrounding commercial development including an adjacent bus station.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.175389-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/74002255.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002255/25a7585591-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002255/25a7585591-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"GAgayle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Albon_Chase_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">GAgayle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Albon_Chase_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"06000737","name":"Downtown Athens Historic District (Additional Documentation, Boundary Increase II and Boundary Decrease)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/downtown-athens-historic-district-additional-documentation-boundary-increase-ii-06000737/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207432","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134286563"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/clarke-county/chase-albon-house-74002255/"}
