It may have been begun before Richmond's 1782 incorporation and reached its present form through construction in 1784 and 1828-29.","why_significant":"The house is one of Richmond's oldest surviving structures and may include the 'old house' named in an August 1784 lease. It is the last significant structure recalling the maritime and mercantile community of Rocketts. No other frame building in Richmond of similar age keeps as much early trim.","narrative":"Standing at 3017 Williamsburg Avenue at the foot of Libby Hill, this frame dwelling in Richmond's east end grew in stages from a small one-story house with a cellar and end chimney. A room and cellar were added possibly in 1784, and in 1828-29 the house was raised to two and one-half stories under a dormered gable roof, with new front rooms, an attic floor and two chimneys. Later changes added second-story rooms on the river side, a front porch and enlarged windows. Inside, Federal-period mantels and woodwork survive, along with three eighteenth-century six-panel doors. Captain John Woodward, who sailed sloops out of Rocketts, lived here in the early nineteenth century. The house was listed as one of the city's oldest surviving structures and the last significant reminder of the Rocketts port neighborhood, where sailors, harbor masters, tobacco inspectors and craftsmen lived and worked. Its early trim is unmatched among Richmond frame buildings of similar age.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal period woodwork; early frame dwelling","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and altered; preservation work in progress when nominated in 1974; owned by the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.291458-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/6829/41682985/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/74002243.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002243/db76247cad-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002243/db76247cad-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Morgan Riley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodward_House_Richmond_Virginia.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Riley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodward_House_Richmond_Virginia.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682985","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodward_House_(Richmond,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16903675"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/woodward-house-74002243/"}
