Its three-part Palladian plan, carved frontispiece entrance, interior trim and especially the drawing room with its elaborate chimneypiece and flanking niches are cited. It also has associations with the Haxall family and visitors such as John Randolph of Roanoke and Bishop William Meade.","narrative":"Strawberry Hill is a two-story, U-shaped frame house on Hinton Street in downtown Petersburg, measuring about 90 by 56 feet. It began around 1800 as a two-story central block with one-story wings, a form documented in an 1805 insurance policy. William Haxall, who bought the site in 1800, raised the wings to two stories in 1816. In 1884 the house was split into three separately owned parts, the main entrance and stairway were moved, and rear additions followed around 1900. Much original trim survives, including a Doric frontispiece doorway, a fanlight doorway and a drawing room with an elaborate chimneypiece and flanking niches. The house is regarded as one of Petersburg's finest early-nineteenth-century residences and an elegant example of Virginia Federal architecture, with a three-part Palladian plan. Later owners included a physician whose guests included John Randolph of Roanoke and Bishop William Meade. At listing it stood unoccupied, with efforts under way to restore it to its 1816 appearance.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Virginia Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as unoccupied and in rundown condition, being preserved until funds can be obtained for restoration; condition rated fair.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.701076-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/6824/41682474/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/74002239.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002239/39d8c6dc33-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002239/39d8c6dc33-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Lp1792","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Strawberry_Hill_2020.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lp1792</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Strawberry_Hill_2020.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"90001572","name":"Petersburg Courthouse Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/petersburg-courthouse-historic-district-90001572/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682474","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawberry_Hill_(Petersburg,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900788"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/petersburg/strawberry-hill-74002239/"}
