It was home to three influential local families: the Campbells, the Cummings and the Mingeas. David Campbell was Governor of Virginia from 1837 to 1840 and an early advocate of public education.","narrative":"Montcalm is a brick farmhouse on a shaded hill just south of Abingdon, Virginia. Completed in 1827 for David Campbell, it is a two-story, five-bay Federal style house with a Flemish bond facade, nine-over-nine windows, a fanlighted entrance and finely detailed interior trim. An original ell extends to the south, and additions were made in the early twentieth century, when the central hall plan was altered and a circular stair was installed. Outbuildings include a smokehouse and slave quarters. Campbell served as clerk of the Washington County court, state senator and Governor of Virginia from 1837 to 1840, and promoted public education. Later owners included Colonel Arthur C. Cummings, a Mexican War veteran and Confederate regimental commander, and the Mingea family. Wilton E. Mingea, Sr., a lumber man, developed the Virginia-Carolina Railroad, known as the Virginia Creeper. The property was listed for its architecture and its association with these families.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition stated as good; listed as occupied private residence with preservation work in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.724663-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/6840/41684065/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/74002148.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002148/9323efb25e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002148/9323efb25e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MONT_CALM,_ABINGDON,_WASHINGTON_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"70000831","name":"Abingdon Historic District (Additional Documentation)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/abingdon-historic-district-additional-documentation-70000831/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684065","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Calm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15255273"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/washington-county/mont-calm-74002148/"}
