The construction date is uncertain, though a 1778 court order may refer to it.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as a good example of an intermediate stage in the change from the Tidewater hall-and-parlor house to the upland building forms of the nineteenth century. Its plan, chimney and stair link it to both traditions. Its unusual eight-inch overhang on the long sides also shows individual eccentricity within vernacular building.","narrative":"Yates Tavern is a modest two-story frame building beside U.S. Route 29 south of Gretna, Virginia. Clad in weatherboards and measuring roughly 16 by 24 feet, it has a gable roof, a rubble end chimney with a freestanding brick stack, and a plan of two rooms with opposed front and rear doors and a closed winder stair in one corner. Its most unusual feature is an eight-inch overhang on each long side at second-floor level, probably the result of a later remodeling that added the upper story. The building is valued as an example of how the seventeenth-century Tidewater hall-and-parlor house evolved into the upland building forms of the nineteenth century. Its construction date is unknown, but a 1778 county court order mentioning Yate's Old House may refer to it. Stephen Yates was charged for keeping a tavern there in 1813, and Samuel Yates took out a license for public entertainment in 1818. At the time of listing it was unoccupied and deteriorated, with restoration planned.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Tidewater hall-and-parlor house form","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as deteriorated and unoccupied, with restoration during the Bicentennial contemplated; a later note says it was restored in 1977.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.071846-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/6825/41682556/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/74002143.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002143/b030a09ea5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002143/b030a09ea5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Historic American Buildings Survey","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yancy_Cabin_Gretna_Virginia.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Historic American Buildings Survey</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yancy_Cabin_Gretna_Virginia.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682556","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yates_Tavern","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16904014"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/pittsylvania-county/yates-tavern-74002143/"}
