Its house evolved into a distinctive five-part plan and remains little changed from its colonial appearance, with fine early paneling and hardware. Surviving outbuildings and an 1866 map make the complex a remarkably complete assemblage with archaeological value.","narrative":"Wales is a plantation house in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, two miles south of the Appomattox River near Petersburg. Its central block, a one-and-one-half-story framed hall-and-parlor house, was apparently built about 1730. One-story wings and connecting hyphens were added around 1752, producing a five-part plan 104 feet long. Inside, the house retains raised-panel doors, plaster and paneled walls, and fireplaces with fluted Doric pilasters. The west wing holds its most elaborate room. Exterior and interior have changed little in two centuries. Several outbuildings survive, including an office, slave quarters and a dairy, and an 1866 map documents others. The house was probably built by Howell Briggs, a militia captain, magistrate and vestryman, who named the plantation for the Prince of Wales. His son Gray Briggs served in the House of Burgesses and as state attorney for Dinwiddie County. The property is valued for its architecture, its intact complex and its archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Probably built by Howell Briggs (1709-1775)","architectural_style":"Five-part Palladian composition","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and unaltered, in private residential use; restored by its present owners without significant changes to the fabric, with preservation work in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.338719-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/6804/41680417/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/74002115.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002115/13896f1a93-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002115/13896f1a93-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"unknown HABS photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wales_HABS_VA1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">unknown HABS photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wales_HABS_VA1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680417","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wales_(Dinwiddie_County,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7961746"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/dinwiddie-county/wales-74002115/"}
