Most of the standing fabric dates from the mid-nineteenth century, and a mill has occupied the site since the seventeenth century.","why_significant":"A mill has stood here for over three hundred years, and the stone foundations may include fabric from Henry Randolph's mill of 1657-1666. It is practically the only early structure left on the heavily developed Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike (U.S. 1). The site also saw Civil War action in May 1864 and is a good example of adaptive reuse as a playhouse and restaurant.","narrative":"Swift Creek Mill is a brick grist mill on a high rubble stone foundation beside a dammed creek along U.S. Route 1 in Chesterfield County. A mill has operated at the site for more than three hundred years, beginning with one built by Henry Randolph between 1657 and 1666, and the stone base may contain material from that first structure. Most of the present brick building, laid in five-course American bond, dates from the mid-nineteenth century, after the Swift Creek Manufacturing Company bought it in 1852. In May 1864 Union forces under General Benjamin F. Butler attempted a crossing of the creek near the mill. After the war it also served as a corn whiskey distillery. The Percival family ran milling operations into the 1950s. Converted in 1965 into a dinner theatre, it keeps its mill race, turbine, two sets of millstones and early timbers. It is nearly the last early structure on this historic turnpike.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Original mill erected by Henry Randolph (1657-1666)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Good condition, altered; converted in 1965 into a dinner theatre and in use as a playhouse and restaurant.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.861473-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/6801/41680154/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/74002113.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002113/e0034707a0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74002113/e0034707a0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Mojo Hand","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SwiftCreekMill2017.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mojo Hand</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SwiftCreekMill2017.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680154","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swift_Creek_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42376976"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/chesterfield-county/swift-creek-mill-74002113/"}
