The mill was probably built by Jacob Winance between 1783 and 1785.","why_significant":"The complex is argued to exemplify the small late-eighteenth or early nineteenth century grist mill type that was essential to the economic development of an agricultural area. The mill remained in continuous operation for nearly 200 years, and a single family, the James family, operated it for over 100 of those years. The mill, manor house and tenant house remain together as a complete complex.","narrative":"Built of random fieldstone on a sloping site in Chester County, the Warwick Mill complex was probably erected by Jacob Winance, also spelled Winands or Winings, between 1783 and 1785, based on tax records. Winance was also an ironmaster. Jacob Hager bought the property in 1797, when the mill was the only building on it. Tax records and newspaper advertisements show that Hager built the manor house and tenant house before 1828. The mill is four stories high on its west elevation and has projecting hoist entrances on each floor for delivering materials. Benjamin James bought the mill in 1864, and the James family operated it for more than a century, until milling stopped in 1968. The complex is significant as a surviving example of the small grist mill complex that supported farming economies in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Its nearly 200 years of continuous operation, and more than a century under one family, are regarded as notable. The mill, manor house and tenant house remain together, which adds to their value as a group.","period_of_significance":"1783-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The grist mill's milling operation was discontinued in 1968 and the grist mill is still owned by a member of the James family.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.892324-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/74001769.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001769/44cec28577-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001769/44cec28577-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Choess","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Warwick_Mill_South_Face.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Choess</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Warwick_Mill_South_Face.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"76001627","name":"Warwick Furnace/Farms","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/warwick-furnace-farms-76001627/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995449","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warwick_Mills","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7971157"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/chester-county/warwick-mills-74001769/"}
