Wing and Mahurin designed it, and Caldwell and Drake of Columbus, Indiana, served as general contractors for a reported cost of $61,500. The two-story building has a Marblehead limestone foundation and rock-faced Amherst sandstone walls. Large arches frame the entrance and windows, wall dormers end in big gables, and the hipped and gabled roof is covered in ceramic tile. A square tower rises about 132 feet and holds a belfry and clock faces. Inside, a central stairwell rises to a vault painted with four scenes of the county economy: quarrying, farming, fishing and fruit growing. The design was closely modeled on the Wood County Courthouse by Yost and Packard. It replaced the county's first courthouse, which had been enlarged in the 1860s. It is recognized as an excellent public example of its style and remains in use.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; built 1898-1901","architect_builder":"Wing and Mahurin (architects); Caldwell and Drake of Columbus, Indiana (general contractors)","architectural_style":"Richardsonian Romanesque","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, occupied and in government use as the county courthouse, with the nomination noting it should meet county needs for many years.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.419182-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001588.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001588/c8831bc5cf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001588/c8831bc5cf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ottawa_County_Courthouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ottawa_County_Courthouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990819","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q130772555"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/ottawa-county/ottawa-county-courthouse-74001588/"}
