Walters, physician, druggist and insurance company president, who was a close friend and disciple of Civil War anti-war figure Clement L. Vallandigham. It is also described as a fine example of an early Victorian Italianate townhouse, one of few remaining in Dayton.","narrative":"Completed in 1857 at 35 East First Street in Dayton, this three-story brick townhouse follows the Renaissance revival, or Italianate, style. It rests on a limestone foundation and has plain limestone quoins, a three-bay facade and an ornate center entrance with stone pilasters, a carved entablature with rosettes and a stone head of Andrew Jackson. Window pediments change by floor: segmental on the first, triangular on the second and horizontal on the third. A deep wood cornice with dentils crowns the roof. The house was built for Dr. Jefferson A. Walters, a physician from Pennsylvania who studied at Eclectic Medical College, opened a Dayton drug store in 1841 and later served as president of the Ohio Fire Insurance Company. He is remembered as a loyal friend and spokesman of Clement L. Vallandigham and arranged publication of Vallandigham's speeches in 1864. The house is regarded as one of few remaining early Victorian Italianate townhouses in Dayton.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; specific date 1857","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Renaissance revival / early Victorian Italianate townhouse","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied; condition marked excellent but altered, with an extensively subdivided and remodeled interior, bricked-up first-floor windows on the main facade, and rear service additions.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.739716-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001583.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001583/9fd5724bae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001583/9fd5724bae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JeffersonWaltersHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JeffersonWaltersHouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100004316","name":"Downtown Dayton Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/downtown-dayton-historic-district-100004316/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990557","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Jefferson_A._Walters_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5304180"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/montgomery-county/walters-dr-jefferson-a-house-74001583/"}
