A small carriage house and carpenter shop remain behind it.","why_significant":"The house is described as an outstanding example of a mid-Victorian southern Ohio farmhouse, with well-preserved interior woodwork, marble fireplaces and plaster ceilings. It is also tied to Nicholas Ohmer, a restaurateur, horticulturist and civic leader who developed the Nick Ohmer Strawberry strain. Early gas lighting and central heating show his progressive outlook.","narrative":"Built in 1864 at 1350 Creighton in Dayton, this two-story brick farmhouse was the country home of Nicholas Ohmer, a French-born confectioner and restaurateur who built a chain of depot restaurants between Columbus and St. Louis. The house is laid out in a Latin cross plan with gabled roofs, a bracketed cornice, carved wood porches and a half-octagonal latticed summer kitchen at the rear. Inside, molded pine woodwork, etched transom glass, seven marble fireplaces and decorated plaster ceilings survive. Ohmer equipped the house with gas chandeliers fed by exterior acetylene tanks and an early central heating plant, unusual for Dayton in the Civil War era. On the surrounding fruit farm he grew and sold fruit and nursery stock and developed the Nick Ohmer Strawberry. He also served on the city council, led the county horticultural society and sat on a bank board. The house is valued as a well-preserved mid-1800s farmhouse.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (1864)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-Victorian southern Ohio farmhouse, with later Eastlake porch woodwork","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, well kept and used as a private residence; the interior has been preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.37481-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001580.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001580/e558029835-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001580/e558029835-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nicholas_Ohmer_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nicholas_Ohmer_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990380","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138610598"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/montgomery-county/ohmer-nicholas-house-74001580/"}
