A copy of Asher Benjamin's The Practical House Carpenter found in the house shows how Ohio builders used pattern handbooks. The form adds that its importance lies less in its architecture than in being the home of a known carpenter-builder.","narrative":"This frame farmhouse on Fenn Road near Medina, Ohio, was built in 1854 by Burritt Blakslee, a local carpenter-builder, as his own home. It is the third house on the site, since two earlier ones burned. The gable end faces the road, and the cornice returns, wide frieze and horizontal door entablature reflect fully developed Greek Revival style. Inside, the stair has a simple walnut rail and balusters, and the parlor floor and the door and window casings are walnut. A rear wing was altered, and a wing on the east side was lost to fire in the 1930s. The house matters mainly because few houses built by carpenter-builders for themselves are known. A copy of Asher Benjamin's The Practical House Carpenter was found inside, supporting the idea that Ohio builders relied on handbooks. Blakslee worked about forty years around Medina and also ran a sawmill and wool carding mill on the Rocky River. He died in 1866.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1854)","architect_builder":"Burritt Blakslee (carpenter-builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition, altered; interior being restored by the owner at the time of nomination; used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.011941-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/74001573.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001573/a6b9b47343-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/74001573/a6b9b47343-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Duds98","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NRHP-Burritt_Blakslee_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Duds98</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NRHP-Burritt_Blakslee_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990191","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138570019"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/medina-county/blakslee-burritt-house-74001573/"}
